Vishay's WSL and WSR Power Metal Strip® Resistors Combine High Power Ratings with Low Resistance Values Down to 0.001

WSL and WSR Power Metal Strip® resistors are the ideal choice for all types of current sensing, voltage division, and pulse applications in motors, power supplies, instruments, and many other end products. Built on proprietary processing techniques, devices in these series feature extremely low resistance values down to 0.001 Ω and low thermal EMF of less than 3 µV/°C. The low ohmic values maximize energy conversion efficiency and minimize power consumption, while the low thermal EMF minimizes sensing errors. The devices provide very low inductance of 0.5 nH to 5 nH while delivering an excellent frequency response to 50 MHz.

 

Both the WSL and WSR resistors feature an all-welded construction and a solid-metal nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy resistive element. Their low TCR of less than 100 ppm/°C minimizes the resistance change caused by self-heating and high-temperature environments. Tolerances of ±0.5 % and ±1 % are available to maximize current-sensing performance, save energy, and provide fast response times to switching currents. For devices with a ±1 % tolerance, resistance values range from 0.001 Ω to 0.5 Ω for the WSL and 0.001 Ω to 0.2 Ω for the WSR.

 

The WSL is available in 0603, 0805, 1205, 2010, 2512, and 2816 size cases with power ratings from 0.1 W to 2 W. The WSR is available in 4527-size cases with ratings of 2 W,   3 W or 5 W. Their high power density allows the size of circuit boards to be reduced, which in turn increases manufacturing throughput and reduces material costs.

 

The WSL and WSR resistors are available with tin/lead or lead (Pb)-free terminations; the lead (Pb)-free version is also RoHS-compliant. The WSL operates at temperatures from -65 °C to +275 °C while the WSR can handle operating temperatures from -65 °C up to 275 °C, allowing for operation in high-temperature conditions with minimal reduction (derating) of rated power.
